How the The Best Country ranking is built: where the list of countries comes from, how the score is calculated, and what the ranking does and does not mean.

1. What the ranking measures

The ranking measures one thing only: the net amount contributed by users in favour of each country. It is a popularity board built from voluntary contributions. It is not a measure of quality of life, safety, economy, governance or any other objective indicator, and it is not derived from any official dataset or expert assessment.

2. How the score is calculated

The score of each country is the sum of contributions supporting it, minus the sum of contributions challenging it. Supporting a review adds to the country it concerns; challenging it subtracts. The score is expressed in US dollars because that is the unit contributed, but it is a display score only — it cannot be spent, transferred, exchanged or redeemed. Scores update in real time, and the ranking can be filtered over the last 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days.

3. Which countries are listed

The list follows the ISO 3166-1 standard, maintained by the International Organization for Standardization. We list the 197 entries that correspond to the 193 United Nations member states plus the 2 UN observer states and 2 widely recognised entries. We apply this standard mechanically: inclusion or exclusion of any territory reflects the ISO list alone and carries no political position, no recognition and no judgement of any sovereignty claim on our part. We do not arbitrate territorial disputes, and we do not amend the list on request.

4. Flags and names

Country names and flags follow the same ISO 3166-1 reference and are served from a public flag library. Where a country is commonly known by several names, we use the ISO short name in English.

5. One vote, one contribution

There is no account and no registration: anyone can contribute, as often as they wish, for any country. This means the ranking reflects how much people are willing to contribute, not how many distinct people took part. We state this openly rather than claim a representativeness the format cannot provide.

6. Moderation

Written reviews pass through an automated word filter and may be reviewed manually. We remove content that is unlawful, hateful, harassing or defamatory, and we may reverse the associated contribution. Removing a review removes its effect on the ranking.

7. No prizes, no payouts

Contributions confer no prize, no reward, no payout and no financial return of any kind. There is no element of chance. The Service is entertainment, and the ranking is a display score — see our Terms of Use and Disclaimer.

8. Corrections

If you spot a factual error in a country name, flag or classification, write to [email protected] and we will correct it. We do not act on requests to add, remove or rename entries on political grounds.
